Solar Lighting for Schools in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement

Solar Lighting for Schools in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement

Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement in Kamwenge District, Uganda, houses nearly 70,000 refugees, mainly from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Only 3% of households have electricity, forcing most to rely on hazardous and inefficient lighting sources like firewood, candles, and kerosene. This lack of reliable lighting severely impacts education, safety, and health within the settlement.

Flo & Friends Charity Organisation proposes a transformative solution: installing solar lighting systems in five primary schools. This project will provide safe, dependable lighting, empowering schools to extend operations into the evening for lessons and extracurricular activities. Students will benefit from better study conditions, while teachers and staff will have enhanced environments for lesson preparation and administrative tasks.

The initiative also aims to improve school safety by enhancing visibility at night, deterring intruders, and reducing gender-based violence risks. Additionally, solar-powered cooking pots will replace firewood for meal preparation at First Child School  supported by Flo & Friends Charity Organisation ,s porridge project , further reducing environmental harm.

Key benefits include:

  • Improved Education: Reliable lighting for studying and teaching boosts learning outcomes.
  • Enhanced Safety: Better visibility deters security threats and ensures safer school operations.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Clean energy reduces reliance on polluting fuels and promotes energy efficiency.

Beyond installation, the project will educate school staff and community members on solar energy maintenance and efficient energy use, fostering a culture of sustainability.

Your support can help bring light to schools and transform the lives of thousands of children and families. By providing access to sustainable energy, we can enhance education, safety, and environmental well-being in the Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement.
